Tibbet Knob: A Short Climb to Beautiful West Virginia Views

I hated camping when I was a kid. Sleeping on the ground, all I could think about was bugs.

Now that I’m older, I have a new appreciation for sleeping in the woods (read more about my story here). I also converted to hammock camping, so no more bugs!

The first overnight camping trip I took was amazing. We headed towards George Washington National Forest for a short trip and hiked up to Tibbet Knob.

About Tibbet Knob

Panoramic overlook view at Tibbet Knob

Tibbet Knob is a moderate 3.1 mile out and back trail with 830 ft. elevation gain and is rated as moderate. It’s a pretty diverse trail with a few steep section and two rock scrambles.  Although less crowded than its sister hike, the popular Big Schloss, Tibbet Knob has one of the best overlooks in the area. Tough to beat for a quick overnight!

Park for free at the Wolf Gap Campground and head towards the yellow trail blazes. After you get past the rock scrambles, trek the last few hundred yards to the beautiful overlook. The campsite sits twenty feet beyond the overlook, big enough to accommodate two tents and plenty of trees for hanging hammocks

Follow the trail back to Wolf Gap Campground to return home.

My First Overnight

The overlook view at Tibbet Knob

At the top of the trail, we met a gentleman and his dog, who shared our fire for a bit and told us a little about his life. Honestly, you never know who you’ll meet on the trail, and I’m glad we could offer him some company.

Hammock camping definitely takes some getting used to. We arrived a little too late in the day, so we rushed to set up camp before dark. Between my bug net falling in my face all night, cold sweaty socks, and the anxiety of sleeping in the woods for the first time… it’s safe to say I didn’t sleep as well as I’d hoped.

I did learn my lesson though: always bring a change of socks

I did eventually fall asleep and woke up on top of a mountain, so that was cool. We hiked back down the mountain and stopped for a hot breakfast and a cup of coffee (which makes sleeping in the woods worth it every time)

Even with the lack of sleep, my first overnight was a success! I had a blast and saw some fabulous views. The hike itself was a nice challenge for me and I enjoyed climbing the rock scrambles. I hope you decide to visit this beautiful trail!
