One of Virginia’s most popular hikes, Sharp Top Trail offers stunning 360° views of the Peaks of Otter and surrounding landscape. The views from the summit are worth the difficult climb!
Sharp Top Trail
Sharp Top Trail is a 3 mile out and back trail with almost 1,300 ft. elevation gain. This trail features a few rock scrambles and a steep climb all the way to the top. If you’re new to hiking, prepare for a workout and bring plenty of water!
Park at the Peaks of Otter Nature Center (Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 86, across the street from the Visitor’s Center). The trailhead is directly to the right of the nature center.
Though the climb is steep, the views are absolutely stunning. The summit features a total 360° view of the surrounding area, with plenty of rocks to climb and enjoy the scenery. There’s also a little cottage at the top that serves as a storm shelter for hikers if needed.
Look out for bears and other wildlife on this trek, as they’re often spotted by hikers. Sharp Top Trail also allows dogs on a leash. Remember to observe wildlife from a distance and follow Leave No Trace guidelines.
A concession-operated bus service takes explorers within 0.25 miles of the summit. For more information on the shuttle service, visit the Shop Top Store.
Close to the summit is another viewpoint called Buzzard’s Roost about 0.3 miles off the main trail. This rocky outlook is less crowded than the summit and still offers amazing views. It takes a few extra minutes and a little more rock climbing, but it’s worth it!

Thank you!
This is such a great time of the year to go hiking with cooler weather in the air and beautiful fall leaves to see. Thanks for inspiring me to get outdoors!
Of course! This really is the best time of the year; I can’t wait to hear about your adventures!
What a gorgeous view. I can see why you would want to stop and hike to the top. I am in the same boat, been not that active over the past few months, need to get some more hiking in.
It was gorgeous! I definitely recommend this hike if you’re on the east coast. I hope you get some hiking in soon!
It’s a beauty, thank you for sharing! I wish the pandemic ends soon, so I can go hiking once again. 🙂
Thank you for reading! Hopefully we’ll be back on the trail before you know it!
