Red Rocks Trading Post Trail: Easy Hike Near Denver

There’s something magical about a first hike in a new place. For us, the Red Rocks Trading Post Trail was more than just a scenic stroll; it marked the beginning of our Colorado hiking adventure.

Nestled just outside Denver, this trail introduced us to the breathtaking landscapes and striking red sandstone that define this part of the Rockies. It offered everything we could’ve hoped for: panoramic views, desert flora, altitude acclimation, and of course… giant, otherworldly rocks.

This guide details how to hike the Red Rocks Trading Post trail, plus interesting viewpoints to look out for along the way. Whether you’re road-tripping through Colorado or just have a free morning in Denver, this quick trail is a must-do.

Red Rocks Trading Post Trail

1.4 mile loop | 364 ft. elevation gain

The Trading Post Trail loops through the heart of Red Rocks Park, winding past towering sandstone formations that rise like ancient monuments from the earth. These natural skyscrapers are made even more dramatic by the contrasting blue skies and sprawling views of the distant Rocky Mountains. Along the way, you’ll hike through open meadows, pass between rock corridors, and follow winding paths that make the entire loop feel dynamic and fun.

While the trail is short and easy to navigate, it still delivers a bit of a challenge due to its dry climate and higher elevation, especially for those visiting from sea level. Denver itself sits at 5,280 feet (the famous Mile High City), and Red Rocks climb even higher, peaking around 6,400 feet. The altitude isn’t extreme, but you’ll feel it if you try to power through too quickly.

We found this hike to be the perfect way to ease into the thinner air. Take it slow, hydrate well, and enjoy the opportunity to acclimate before tackling bigger trails in the Rockies.

Dogs are welcome on this trail if they’re leashed; you’ll see plenty of four-legged hikers enjoying the scenery. Keep in mind that there’s limited shade, so bring water for both you and your pup, and don’t forget your sun protection!

Trail Highlights

One of the best things about this loop is how much it packs into a relatively short distance. From impressive geology to unexpected wildlife, here are some highlights to look out for:

Ship Rock, Creation Rock, & Frog Rock

These three named formations are among the most iconic in the park; once you see them, you’ll understand why. They’re massive, uniquely shaped, and seem to glow different shades of red depending on the time of day.

  • Ship Rock looms over the northern section of the trail, shaped like the hull of an ancient vessel bursting through the dirt.
  • Creation Rock towers over the trail and amphitheater as one of the two massive sandstone slabs that form the iconic Red Rocks venue.
  • Frog Rock might not be as immediately obvious, but it’s a fun one to find; it looks just like a crouched frog once you spot it!

Native Plants and Wildlife

As you walk the loop, keep an eye out for the vibrant life that thrives in this high-desert environment. Prickly pear cactus, rabbitbrush, and juniper trees line the path, while lizards scurry across warm rock faces. You might even spot a mule deer or a red-tailed hawk calling overhead. It’s a lovely reminder that even in a seemingly barren landscape, life abounds.

Red Rocks Amphitheater

Red Rocks homes one of the most iconic music venues in the world. Built into the rock itself, its acoustics are legendary and its setting surreal. While the Trading Post Trail doesn’t take you directly through the amphitheater, it runs close by, and you’ll definitely want to at least take a peek.

We unfortunately couldn’t explore inside due to a concert happening that day (tip: check the schedule ahead of time), but even catching a glimpse of the outer walls and entry points made our day. The scale and integration into the landscape are genuinely impressive. It would be a dream to see a show there someday!

Tips for Your Visit

  • Arrive early, especially during spring and summer. Red Rocks is a popular destination and the trailhead parking fills up quickly.
  • Parking is free, and there are clean restrooms and a visitor center near the Trading Post.
  • Pack extra water even for short hikes, especially if you aren’t used to the altitude.
  • Wear sun protection and consider layers. Mornings start cool and quickly heat up.
  • Take your time! The views are worth slowing down for.
  • Download the trail map beforehand or check the signage at the visitors center.
  • Bring a camera or phone with storage to spare; you’ll constantly stop to take photos! I unfortunately learned this one the hard way and had to steal my husbands phone for the latter half of our trip.
