With gravity defying rock formations, variable terrain, and tons of wildlife and trail access, Vedauwoo attracts hikers, climbers, and explorers from across the USA.

Vedauwoo Recreation Area, part of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, features stunning rock formations that appear to defy gravity. The land surrounding it is flat and full of pine forests and various flora and fauna. From the top of the rocky crags, climbers can see 75 miles south, all the way to Long’s Peak in Colorado! No wonder this place is called “Land of the Earthborn Spirit.”

Things to Do in Vedauwoo

When we visited, we climbed a few of the rocky faces, enjoyed the sites, and dreamed of camping under the open skies. Here are the top things to do on your next visit.

1. Climbing

People travel from all over the world to experience challenging wide crack climbing, called “offwidths.” Offwidths are cracks that are too large to create a hold with your fist, but too narrow to stick your body through, making these climbs extremely difficult. Seasoned climbers can sample from 1,000+ climbs; Vedauwoo features several different styles of climbs with varying difficulties.

Climbing season is from Mid-April through Mid-October.

2. Hiking + Biking

Several trails weave in and around Vedauwoo, both for hiking and biking. The trails vary in difficulty, from flat trails across the plains to trekking through the forest.

The most popular trail is the Turtle Rock Trail, a 3.3 mile trek that loops around the entire chain of rock formations and is rated as easy. This trail is open to both hikers and bikers and displays the beauty and biodiversity of the recreation area.

3. Camping

Though Vedauwoo has a formal campground with 30+ campsites (only $10 per night!), visitors are welcome to camp almost anywhere. Dispersed camping is free, though there are some limitations to preserve the natural area.

As always, be respectful of the area and Leave No Trace!

4. Wander

Vedauwoo is a wonderful place to leave the trail and wander freely. You can create a new adventure every time you visit! Follow the popular trails or explore a game path to see where it goes.

5. Observe Wildlife

Wildlife runs abundant in Vedauwoo, making it the perfect place to catch a glimpse of the area’s biodiversity. If you see any animals, give them some distance and observe from afar.
